Shelter of Hope Campaign Raises $512,683

American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties’ Shelter of Hope Campaign Raises $512,683

The five-day campaign generated much-needed funds for local disaster relief

SAN DIEGO – June 6, 2018 — The American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties concluded its annual Shelter of Hope campaign on June 5 upon reaching the $500,000 fundraising goal. The campaign began on June 1 with a simulated disaster shelter, housed out of a Red Cross emergency response vehicle, that visited five different locations in San Diego County to raise funds and awareness.

As a part of the campaign, local Red Cross CEO Sean Mahoney slept each night in the Shelter of Hope on a Red Cross cot and was able to return home following the campaign’s completion in Old Town Market on the fifth day. “My stay in the Shelter of Hope gave me new insight into what displaced families experience during a disaster,” said Mahoney. “I’m so grateful to volunteers and donors who made this year’s Shelter of Hope a success because every dollar raised allows our Red Cross region to continue to provide help and hope to families in need. Donations are more than money – they become a hot meal, a warm blanket, a safe place to stay. Whether it’s a middle-of-the night home fire or a wildfire that’s affecting an entire neighborhood, the Red Cross can be there thanks to funds raised year-round for local disaster relief.”

Shelter of Hope donations support local disaster relief to uphold the Red Cross mission of alleviating human suffering in the face of emergencies. The American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties responds to about one disaster about every 24 hours and the region has assisted more than 290 families in nearly 140 disasters this calendar year.

“This was an incredible year for Shelter of Hope and a great opportunity to raise awareness about what the local Red Cross does to support the community every day,” said Dave Geier, board chair of the local Red Cross and senior vice president of San Diego Gas & Electric. “The money raised will fund food, shelter and immediate needs for families displaced by emergencies and disasters, support preparedness initiatives like Prepare San Diego and the Home Fire Campaign. With hard work from our volunteers, these efforts keep our region safe and resilient.”

Shelter of Hope would not have been possible without the generosity of anonymous donors who provided more than $250,000 in matching funds and our sponsors, including: San Diego Gas & Electric, Wells Fargo, AT&T, Barona Resort & Casino, Cox Communications, U.S. Bank, Wawanesa Insurance, Beta Engineering and the San Diego Business Journal.
