Red Cross Offering Free Volunteer Training Program in Presque Isle

Recruiting Area Residents to Join Zero2Hero Program

PRESQUE ISLE – This weekend, the Red Cross in Maine will be offering a free training for individuals interested in volunteering with the organization.

Residents who are interested in helping a family who has recently been impacted by a disaster, like a home fire incident, are encouraged to enroll in the American Red Cross Zero2Hero program.

The free training program will take place at the University of Maine at Presque Isle and provide new volunteers with the necessary skills to work at a shelter and assist those individuals affected when a disaster strikes, locally or nationally.  The program will take new volunteers from zero Red Cross experience to becoming a trained disaster services volunteer in just three days.

The Red Cross Zero2Hero program provides the training necessary to become:
- A Disaster Response Volunteer – After a disaster, a Response Team volunteer will meet victims, assess their needs, and help them begin the recovery process.
- A Shelter Volunteer – In the case of a large scale disaster event, a Shelter Volunteer will assist in establishing a shelter to temporary house individuals displaced by a disaster.

“Currently, the Red Cross in Maine has more than 1,100 volunteers,” said Danielle Hardré, Disaster Program Manager for the Red Cross in Northern and Easter Maine. “Having a strong volunteer base will ensure the Red Cross is able to provide local assistance when disasters strike.”  In order to respond to the hundreds of disasters in Maine, most of which are home fires, the Red Cross relies on the generosity of our volunteer network.

Individuals interested in signing up for the Zero2Hero program can do so by logging onto the website at or contacting Danielle Hardre at or call (207) 941-2903 ext. 405.
