Red Cross to Install Free Smoke Alarms in Bangor to Promote Home Fire Safety

**Bangor Residents Can Schedule Appointment by Calling Today**

BANGOR – On Saturday, September 24th, the American Red Cross in Maine will be going door-to-door and installing free smoke alarms in Bangor.  Residents wishing to schedule an appointment to have smoke alarms, free of charge, installed in their homes should call (207) 941-2903 ext. 113.

Red Cross staff, consisting primarily of community volunteers, will be speaking with Bangor residents about fire safety, emergency escape plans, and the importance of having working smoke alarms.  Within the city of Bangor, volunteers will visit homes throughout the day with the goal of installing more than 100 free smoke alarms.

Over the last two years, the Red Cross in Maine has installed more than 3,500 smoke alarms in homes throughout the state. Red Cross volunteers are constantly working in communities throughout the state to reduce home fires and a working smoke alarm increases the odds of someone surviving a home fire by 50 percent.

The event is part of the Red Cross’ National Home Fire Campaign launched two years ago with the goal of reducing the number of deaths and injuries from home fires by 25 percent nationally over five years.

When a fire breaks out in a home, residents have about two minutes to escape.  “Smoke alarms provide an early warning when a home fire starts, and combined with an emergency escape plan, greatly increase your odds of getting out of the house safely,” says Danielle Hardré, a Red Cross Disaster Program Manager for Northern and Eastern Maine.
