Red Cross Run For The Red 5K and Fun Walk, Sunday, December 8th

SUMMIT, NJ, November 21, 2013 - The American Red Cross North Jersey Region Run For The Red 5K will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2013 in Millburn, New Jersey. The 8th annual event is being coordinated with the help of The Millburn Township Committee and the Sneaker Factory. This year’s co-chairs, Barry and Pat O’Brien, long-time Red Cross volunteers and residents of Short Hills, are confident that the 2013 Run For The Red is on pace to be the biggest yet.

“We are expanding the reach of this year’s Run For The Red beyond its Millburn-Short Hills origins,” says Barry O’Brien, “It’s going to be a special day where we can significantly impact the mission of the Red Cross.” Last year, in addition to the response to Superstorm Sandy in the state, the Red Cross North Jersey Region responded to 478 local disasters, helping 1,250 families displaced by home fires. “I don’t believe the public is aware that Red Cross volunteers on are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond to help families affected by disasters every day,” says O’Brien.

Teams of walkers and runners are welcome to participate in the race and can compete for fundraising prizes and race awards to 5K finishers by age group and by team. The event offers participants a great community day complete with door prizes, a DJ, snacks after the race, and team photos. Additionally, American Red Cross blood donors will be given a “Life Saver” tag to wear on race day in recognition of their actions. Proceeds from Run For The Red will support the American Red Cross programs and services.

Event day registration and check-in begins at 8:00 a.m. at the Millburn Free Public Library on Glen Avenue in Millburn. The event's youngest participants can compete in a Children's Fun Run at 9:30 a.m. and the Official Race begins at 10:00 a.m. Walkers and runners will enjoy a scenic "out and back" course through the tree-lined streets of the South Mountain Reservation. The course is a USA Track and Field Association recognized Grand Prix Event worth 500 points and scoring is provided by Compuscore.

Registration is $20 for all participants who register in advance. The last day for online registration is December 3rd. Event day registration will be $25 on site. USATF-NJ members receive a $3 discount. The first 300 participants to pick up race packets will receive the highly coveted, long-sleeve souvenir T-shirt!
