Red Cross and Microsoft Invite Community to Support the Troops

PRINCETON, NJ, April 5, 2013 -- The American Red Cross and Microsoft invite community members to record or write messages of appreciation to members of the U.S. Armed Forces during Show Your Support Day, a Red Cross Service to Armed Forces (SAF) event being held on Saturday, April 20, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Microsoft Store at the Bridgewater Commons Mall in Bridgewater.

Shoppers are invited to visit the store and, with the help of Microsoft technology, record a message of appreciation to members of the Armed Forces. Visitors will also have the opportunity to write messages and make cards. The Red Cross will distribute the messages to members of the military serving overseas. Red Cross SAF volunteers will be on hand to assist at the event.

American Red Cross Service to Armed Forces assists members of the military and their families by sending and receiving emergency messages. A worldwide communications network operates 24 hours a day, 365 days per year, sending messages regarding death or serious illness of a family member, the birth of a child, or other family emergency. The Red Cross also supports members of the military and their families during deployment and when they return home through financial assistance programs and veteran services.

Last year, the American Red Cross North Jersey Region helped 884 military families send emergency messages, receive financial assistance, and get counseling and referrals. Red Cross SAF volunteers in the region also support military deployments and homecomings, host social events at local veteran homes and hospitals and send care packages to military members serving overseas.

Show Your Support Day is one in a series of events made available through a partnership between the American Red Cross North Jersey Region and the Microsoft Store at Bridgewater Commons. The Microsoft Store has hosted a volunteer registration with Red Cross Volunteer Services and a Scavenger Hunt with the Red Cross Somerset Youth Council in March.
