Red Cross to Honor Heroes at Celebrate Red!

FAIRFIELD, NJ, March 19, 2014 – The American Red Cross will hold Celebrate Red! on the evening of Thursday, April 3, 2014 at The Park Savoy Estate in Florham Park, New Jersey. The annual fundraising gala will celebrate March is Red Cross Month and toast the incredible impact three unique honorees have made in the community. Guests will enjoy the evening’s cuisine in the setting of a historic estate, dancing to live entertainment by The Franklin & Alison Orchestra, and exciting silent auction prizes.

Honorees include Verizon, recipient of the Corporate Hero Award; Abraham and Sharon Brender, recipients of the Quinn Award; and the Jersey City Department of Public Safety, recipient of the Community Hero Award.

“We are proud to recognize our every day heroes at Celebrate Red! this year,” said Mathieu Nelessen, regional CEO, American Red Cross North Jersey Region. “Our incredible honorees have all demonstrated a remarkable commitment to educating the community about emergency preparedness.”

In addition to Verizon’s steadfast support for Red Cross disaster relief efforts, the company continues to build its dynamic partnership with the Red Cross to bring awareness about disaster preparedness to the community at large.

Abraham and Sharon Brender of Millburn are longtime supporters of Red Cross Preparedness and Health and Safety Services. Their generosity through the Danielle Brender Fund, Inc., and enthusiasm for training the community in CPR and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), has taught lifesaving skills to countless individuals.

First responders with the Jersey City Department of Public Safety perform lifesaving work every day and respond to a tremendous number of multiple-family home fires each year. Jersey City also partnered with the Red Cross, FEMA and fellow honoree Verizon to host a National Preparedness Month event to promote the importance of disaster preparedness, emergency communications and volunteerism.

Proceeds from Celebrate Red! will benefit Red Cross programs and services including meals delivered to the homebound and elderly, linking military families during emergencies, disaster preparedness education, and disaster relief for families affected by local disasters such as home fires.

During the months of January and February alone, Disaster Services volunteers responded to 102 home fires affecting 248 families in the region, helping more than 744 people with emergency assistance for temporary lodging, food and clothing as needed. The cost in direct assistance was $151,000.

Celebrate Red! Committee Co-Chairs Jennifer Harrison and Christine Reilly and the Red Cross are grateful for the support from sponsors, including Celgene, the event’s Disaster Relief Sponsor.

Additional sponsors include: Humanity Sponsors Verizon and Investors Bank; Preparedness Sponsors C.R. Bard, Ernst & Young, and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom; Lifesaver Sponsors Buck, Seifert & Jost, Inc. and Budd Larner; and Hero Sponsors Bassett Associates, J. Fletcher Creamer & Son, Inc., New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Group, and Drs. Robert and Susan Rubino.
