Red Cross Assists Family of Four After Pine City Fire

CORNING, N.Y. (May 21, 2015) — Disaster Action Team volunteers from the Finger Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross provided assistance to a family of four that was displaced from its home by a fire Wednesday night on Pennsylvania Avenue in Pine City (Chemung County).

The Red Cross volunteers provided the family with three adults and one child with financial assistance for temporary lodging, vouchers for food, comfort kits with personal hygiene items and a clean-up kit. Red Cross volunteers will remain available to the family for support, counseling and referrals to local agencies that will provide long-term assistance during their recovery.

Since Monday, Red Cross volunteers from the Finger Lakes Chapter have provided assistance to eight people (six adults, two children) from three families who were displaced from their homes by fires in Pine City, and Arkport and Addison in Steuben County.

TWO LIFESAVING STEPS The American Red Cross has launched an initiative to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25 percent over the next five years. The Red Cross is asking every household in America to take two simple steps: check existing smoke alarms and practice fire drills at home.

As part of the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign, the Red Cross is joining with fire departments and community groups nationwide to install free smoke detectors in homes that need them. For more information or to schedule an installation, please contact Judith Coleman, Disaster Program Manager for the American Red Cross Finger Lakes Chapter, at or (607) 936-3766. The Finger Lakes Chapter includes Chemung, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Seneca, Wayne and Yates counties.
