Red Cross Names William Maxwell Volunteer of the Month

ITHACA, N.Y. (Dec. 5, 2013) — The American Red Cross of Tompkins County has named William Maxwell, of Ithaca, as its Volunteer of the Month for November 2013. The Volunteer of the Month program, sponsored by Dunkin’ Donuts, recognizes dedicated Red Cross volunteers for their hard work and commitment to the humanitarian organization.

Originally from Philadelphia, Maxwell moved to Ithaca in 1952 as an undergraduate student at Cornell University. He received his Ph.D. at Cornell and became a professor, teaching courses in the School of Operations Research and Information Engineering. After retiring in 1998, Maxwell became a volunteer with the Red Cross because he wanted to give back to the community.

Maxwell has worked with many of the Red Cross services, including blood collection and disaster response. He has also volunteered at a Red Cross food pantry and as a Red Cross water safety instructor. In the summer, he’s a voluntary lifeguard and supervisor at the Alex Haley Municipal Pool in Ithaca.

Maxwell is a member of the Red Cross’ Clara Barton Society for donors who make generous financial contributions to the Red Cross. A volunteer for several other local organizations, Maxwell received the “Good Neighbor Award” from the Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC) in 2011 and an Award for Excellence from the Tompkins Trust Co. in 2008.

Dunkin’ Donuts has generously supplied Red Cross chapters and branches throughout Central and Northern New York with gift cards to distribute monthly to deserving volunteers, and Maxwell received a $25 gift card as a token of appreciation for his volunteer service.
