ITHACA, N.Y. (Sept. 10, 2014) — In celebration of National Preparedness Month, the American Red Cross of Tomkins County will host “CPR Saturday” Sept. 13, when it offers free, hands-only CPR training from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Shops at Ithaca Mall.
The training will teach participants when and how to perform hands-only CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). Participants of all ages are welcome, and each training session will last about 30 minutes. The American Red Cross-certified CPR instructor will provide continuous training during the four-hour period, so participants can choose a time that’s most convenient for them.
Red Cross staff and volunteers at The Shops at Ithaca Mall will also provide visitors with information on other Red Cross health-and-safety courses, and information on how families can create a disaster plan for their households that will keep them safe during all emergencies.
Here are the details of “CPR Saturday”:
Who: Anyone interested in learning hands-only CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and/or disaster preparedness.
What: Free, hands-only CPR training from an American Red Cross-certified instructor and information on disaster preparedness and emergency planning.
When: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13 (each training session is about 30 minutes)
Where: The Shops at Ithaca Mall (between Subway and Sterling Optical, near food court)
Why: Research has shown that continuous hands-only CPR can be effective in caring for a person with no signs of life when a rescuer is unable, untrained or unwilling to perform full CPR.
A certificate will not be issued for the hands-only CPR training. The Red Cross recommends training in full CPR for people who are workplace responders; live or play around water or own a pool or hot tub; have children or work with children; or have a job-related duty to respond.
