SYRACUSE, N.Y. (April 16, 2015) — The American Red Cross of Central New York will open a shelter at about 8 p.m. Thursday for 18 people from four families who were displaced from their apartments by a fire early Thursday afternoon at 412 Craddock St., Syracuse.
The shelter will be at St. Lucy’s Church on Gifford Street in Syracuse, and Red Cross volunteers will provide the 18 tenants (10 adults, eight children 17 and under) with food, drinks, cots, blankets, and personal hygiene items. The tenants will be lodged at St. Lucy’s Food Pantry until the shelter is opened.
The 18 tenants are from four of the building’s six units. One unit was empty, and two adults from the other unit do not need lodging at the shelter but may require other Red Cross assistance.
The shelter will remain open until Monday morning. Red Cross volunteers will remain available to all of the families for support, counseling and referrals to local agencies that will provide long-term assistance during their recovery.
Less than 2 ½ hours after being called by the Syracuse Fire Department to the Craddock Street fire, the Red Cross volunteers were called to another apartment fire on West Fayette Street in Syracuse. Two adults and three children from one of the units were impacted by the fire, and the Red Cross volunteers provided them with vouchers for food, a clean-up kit with cleaning items, and comfort kits with personal hygiene items.
TWO LIFESAVING STEPS
The American Red Cross has launched an initiative to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25 percent over the next five years. The Red Cross is asking every household in America to take two simple steps: check existing smoke alarms and practice fire drills at home.
As part of the Home Fire Campaign, the Red Cross is joining with fire departments and community groups nationwide to install free smoke detectors in homes that need them. For more information or to schedule an installation, please contact the American Red Cross of Central New York at 315-234-2299 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
