SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Feb. 5, 2015) — Disaster Action Team volunteers from the American Red Cross of Central New York responded to three incidents from about 11 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday and provided assistance and support to eight Syracuse residents.
Late Thursday night, Red Cross volunteers provided financial assistance for food and lodging at an area hotel to a family of five (two adults, three children) that was displaced from its home on Herbert Street in Syracuse by a carbon monoxide leak.
Early Wednesday morning, the volunteers responded to a house fire on Arthur Street in Syracuse. The Red Cross is providing the three adults who live in the house with financial assistance for food, clothing, shoes and seasonal garments. The Red Cross is also providing lodging at an area hotel to two of the adults; the third adult chose to stay with a family member.
Red Cross volunteers also responded to a house fire Wednesday morning on East Third Street in East Syracuse, but the adult who lives in the home has declined assistance from the Red Cross.
The Red Cross volunteers will remain available to the residents for support, counseling and referrals to local agencies that will provide long-term assistance during their recovery.
TWO LIFESAVING STEPS As the bitter temperatures continue this week and home heating devices are in heavy use, it is important families and individuals remain vigilant in practicing home fire safety. The Red Cross is asking every resident to take two simple steps that can save lives: check your existing smoke alarms and practice fire drills at home.
