SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Dec. 19, 2014) — Disaster Action Team volunteers from the American Red Cross of Central New York provided assistance to 24 people from five families who were displaced from their homes by three fires this week in Oswego, Onondaga and Cayuga counties.
On Thursday, Red Cross volunteers provided food, clothing and lodging at an area hotel to six adults and four children from three families who were displaced by an electrical fire at their multi-family home on County Route 17 in Williamstown (Oswego County).
On Wednesday night, Red Cross volunteers provided food, clothing, seasonal garments and lodging at an area hotel to six adults and two children who were displaced from their home on Hixon Avenue in Syracuse (Onondaga County). And on Tuesday, Red Cross volunteers provided food, clothing, seasonal garments and lodging at an area hotel to six adults who were displaced by a fire at their home on Victory Road in Red Creek (Cayuga County).
The Red Cross volunteers will remain available to the families for support, counseling and referrals to local agencies that will provide long-term assistance during their recovery.
TWO LIFESAVING STEPS With home fires on the rise in the cold weather, the Red Cross is asking every household to take two simple steps that can save lives: check their existing smoke alarms and practice fire drills at home.
