American Red Cross To Open Harrisville Shelter at 8 p.m. Monday

The American Red Cross will open a shelter at Harrisville Central School in Harrisville, Lewis County, at about 8 p.m. today for residents of Lewis and St. Lawrence counties who remain without power and unable to stay in their homes because of this past weekend’s ice storm.

Harrisville Central School is at 14371 Pirate Lane, Harrisville. Red Cross volunteers will provide each shelter resident with a cot, blanket, food and personal hygiene items.

The American Red Cross shelter for Jefferson County residents that opened Sunday night at Watertown High School, 1335 Washington St., Watertown, will remain open Monday night. On Sunday night, the Red Cross closed its shelter at Norwood-Norfolk Central School in Norwood, St. Lawrence County, because it was no longer needed by residents in that area.

“We remain committed to providing all residents in Jefferson, St. Lawrence and Lewis counties with food, a warm place to sleep and other essentials they’ll need until they’re able to return safely to their homes,” said Jane Gendron, Community Executive of the American Red Cross of Northern New York.

In addition to the Red Cross shelters in Watertown, Harrisville and Norwood, the Red Cross is partnering with fire departments and other organizations throughout the area by providing supplies for their shelters. The Red Cross has provided cots, blankets, food and personal hygiene items for shelters at the fire departments in Alexandria Bay, Chaumont, Henderson and Sackets Harbor, the American Legion in Dexter, the Recreation Center in Cape Vincent, Colton-Pierrepont Junior/Senior High School in Colton, and Gouverneur Central School in Gouverneur.
