Northeast, PA - On Wednesday, August 20, the American Red Cross NEPA Region will present “The Pillowcase Project” to children attending Camp Military Kid Strong at Camp Victory. The camp, hosted by Easter Seals and Operation Military Kids, is located at 58 Camp Victory Road in Millville. There will be two sessions: 9 to 10:30 A.M. and 10:30 A.M. to 12 P.M. The Pillowcase Project is a nationwide pilot program with a vision of teaching kids to be prepared for any disaster and to teach empowerment through a series of age-appropriate activities. It is sponsored by Disney.
The Pillowcase Program is implemented by trained Red Cross volunteers in a one-hour classroom session. Students participating in the project will each receive a workbook and certificate of completion. They will also have the opportunity to decorate and personalize their own pillowcase, which are pre-printed with Disney characters and suggested items to include in the kit, such as: toothpaste, flashlight, blanket and a radio.
The program is geared to youth from 3rd to 5th grade. Children will learn the importance of being prepared before a hazardous event such as a home fire, weather-related disasters and other emergencies, in addition to learning coping skills through exercises like breathing with color and symbols of strength. Children will also create an emergency supplies kit checklist, contact cards and a communications plan.
The Pillowcase Project was originally created in New Orleans and was inspired by local university students carrying their belongings in pillowcases in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Media are encouraged to attend.
