Red Cross to Benefit from Annual Erie Yacht Club Charity Regatta

ERIE, Pa. – On Sunday, area residents will have the opportunity to race their boats around the bay of Lake Erie at the 29th Annual Erie Yacht Club Charity Regatta. This year, the event benefits the American Red Cross Greater Erie County Chapter; participants can enjoy a fun day on the lake while simultaneously helping their neighbors in need after a disaster.

“We are so excited and appreciative to benefit from the Annual Erie Yacht Club Charity Regatta,” said Pam Masi, executive director of the local Red Cross. “We could not fulfill our humanitarian mission in the community every day without the generosity of donors and partners, such as the Erie Yacht Club.”

The Regatta will be held on Sunday, Aug. 25 at the Erie Yacht Club, located at 1 Ravine Drive in Erie. The Skipper’s Meeting will kick off the event at 11 a.m. on the Clubhouse Deck; the race will start at 1 p.m.

“Since 1895, the Erie Yacht Club has been a proud member of the Erie community, and we are gratified to have raised more than half a million dollars for local charities over the 28 year history of our Regatta,” said Commodore Matt Niemic. “The Club and its members are committed to the Erie community and are thrilled and proud to have partnered with the Erie County Chapter of the American Red Cross for this year’s Regatta. It is sure to be our biggest and best.”

The event will include a 5-mile race around the bay, followed by live entertainment from local band Lucky Dog, a barbeque buffet (served from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.) and a trophy presentation, among other festivities. Additionally, attendees will have the chance to win from more than $5,000 in donated prizes.

Both Spinnaker and Jib and Main class sailboats are welcome to participate in the event; powerboats can be entered as spectator boats. Registration for all boats is $10 per foot. Currently, there are more than 70 boats registered for the event.

All proceeds will benefit the disaster relief efforts of the American Red Cross. Last year, the Greater Erie County Chapter responded to approximately 52 local emergencies and assisted more than 400 people with their immediate, disaster-caused needs such as food, clothing and shelter.
