W. Hazleton – On Thursday, July 31, 2014, the American Red Cross Hazleton Chapter will present “The Pillow Case Project” to campers at the Hazleton YMCA/YWCA, 75 S. Church Street in Hazleton. There will be 2 programs: one from 10 to 11 A.M. and the second from 11 A.M. to Noon.
The Pillow Case Project is a nationwide pilot program with a vision of teaching kids to be prepared for any disaster and to teach empowerment through a series of age-appropriate activities. It is sponsored by Disney.
The Pillowcase Program is implemented by trained Red Cross volunteers in a one-hour classroom session. Students participating in the project will each receive a workbook and certificate of completion. They will also have the opportunity to decorate and personalize their own pillowcase, which are pre-printed with Disney characters and suggested items to include in the kit, such as: toothpaste, flashlight, blanket and a radio.
The program is geared to youth from 3rd to 5th grade. Children will learn the importance of being prepared before a hazardous event such as a home fire, weather-related disasters and other emergencies, in addition to learning coping skills through exercises like breathing with color and symbols of strength. Children will also create an emergency supplies kit checklist, contact cards and a communications plan.
The Pillowcase Project was originally created in New Orleans and was inspired by local university students carrying their belongings in pillowcases in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Media are encouraged to attend.
