Philadelphia, PA - The American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania (SEPA) will honor Independence Blue Cross CEO Daniel J. Hilferty with the 2014 Citizen of the Year Award during its 31st annual award breakfast on June 18th at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel.
For more than 30 years, the American Red Cross SEPA has honored local citizens for their outstanding leadership and commitment to our region’s civic and charitable organizations. This year is no exception. The American Red Cross is honoring Hilferty for his strong support of Red Cross services and passionate advocacy of corporate philanthropy through employee engagement and financial support.
“It is an honor to receive this year’s Citizen of the Year Award from the American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania, an organization that works tirelessly to provide compassionate care to the people in our region,” said Hilferty. “The partnership between Independence Blue Cross and the American Red Cross is truly special because both organizations share a deep commitment to the health and wellness of our community, especially during their most difficult and trying times.”
Deeply committed to our region, Hilferty lends his time and expertise to a number of organizations. In addition to his corporate responsibilities, he currently serves on the Board of Overseers of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and on the boards of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition, J.J. White Inc., and the Irish Educational Development Foundation. He is a member of the board of trustees of Drexel Neumann Academy and the vice chair of the board of trustees of Saint Joseph’s University. In 2008, Saint Joseph’s University’s Erivan K. Haub School of Business honored alumnus Hilferty with its Hall of Fame award.
Nationally, Hilferty serves on the board of directors for the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) — a national federation of 37 independent, community-based and locally operated Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies that collectively provide health care coverage for nearly one in three Americans. He is chairman of the Health Policy and Advocacy Committee of the BCBSA. Hilferty also serves on the board of directors for America’s Health Insurance Plans, a national association representing nearly 1,300 member companies providing health insurance coverage to more than 200 million Americans.
“Daniel Hilferty’s sense of responsibility to his community is unparalleled,” said American Red Cross SEPA CEO Judge Reneé Cardwell Hughes. “Over the years, Dan has been a great friend to the Red Cross. But it’s not just us they support. Dan and Independence Blue Cross uplift this entire community in so many ways, and they deserve to be honored.”
