PHILADELPHIA, JUNE 25, 2015
— The American Red Cross Eastern Pennsylvania Region honored David L. Cohen, Senior Executive Vice President of Comcast Corporation, and Comcast NBCUniversal with the 2015 Citizen of the Year Award during its 32nd annual award breakfast.
For the past 32 years, the American Red Cross has honored local citizens for their outstanding leadership and commitment to our region’s civic and charitable organizations. This year is no exception. The American Red Cross honored Mr. Cohen and Comcast NBCUniversal for their strong support of the Red Cross disaster relief efforts following Superstorm Sandy.
In the aftermath of Sandy, Comcast NBCUniversal was able to quickly turn around a mega telethon that helped the American Red Cross raise more than $23 million that directly assisted those in need.
"We are incredibly grateful for the support of David Cohen and all of the Comcast NBCUniversal family before, during and after Superstorm Sandy," said Judge Renee Hughes (ret.), Eastern Pennsylvania Region Chief Executive Officer. "Their support three years ago, and still today, continues to allow us to provide immediate relief to those impacted by the disaster."
Superstorm Sandy was one of the most destructive storms in U.S. history. It pummeled the East Coast in October 2012 — endangering lives, causing severe damage, and disrupting the lives of millions of people. David and the Comcast NBCUniversal team responded immediately, drawing on every resource they had to help the communities and neighbors stay safe and informed. In addition to the Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together telethon, the company worked around the clock to deliver unprecedented and up-to-the-minute news coverage of the storm, restore communications services to their customers, open up access to approximately 20,000 XFINITY hotspots providing free WiFi access for people to communicate with family and friends or receive crucial recovery information, and partner with local agencies and organizations to set up free broadband Internet and telephone service in temporary shelters.
"Comcast NBCUniversal is proud to support the important work of the American Red Cross, and in particular the Eastern Pennsylvania Region chapter, which has been a vital member of the Greater Philadelphia community for almost 100 years," Mr. Cohen said. "Both before and after Superstorm Sandy, our employees were guided by a simple desire to help, and on behalf of the efforts of our 1,300 field technicians on the ground and the NBCUniversal employees who brought the benefit telethon to life in less than 36 hours, it is truly an honor to receive this award."
Past Citizen of the Year honorees include Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter; Nick DeBenedictis, Chairman and CEO, Aqua America; Denis O’Brien, President & CEO of PECO Energy Company; Jerry Sweeney, President & CEO of Brandywine Realty Trust; David L.
