PROVIDENCE, R.I., October 15, 2014 — The American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter is offering special Disaster Boot Camps that will provide information and basic skills needed to become a registered Red Cross volunteer, supporting disaster response in Rhode Island.

The Disaster Boot Camps will be offered in October and November:

  • East Providence: Wednesday, October 29, 6PM
  • South Kingstown: Wednesday, November 12, 6PM
  • Newport: Saturday, November 15, 1PM
  • Westerly: Tuesday, November 18, 6PM

The Boot Camps are open to Rhode Islanders from any community. Specific training locations and further registration details will be provided when potential volunteers register online at http://bit.ly/RIRedCrossBootCamp.

From major disasters like Superstorm Sandy or Tropical Storm Irene to residential house fires, the Red Cross responds to more than 200 incidents each year in Rhode Island. Red Cross volunteers provide shelter, food, emotional support, health services and more during emergency responses. “Our workforce is more than 95% volunteer. We could not be there for our neighbors without the help of volunteers,” said American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter Executive Director Paula Montgomery.

The Boot Camps will provide an introduction to Red Cross disaster response and equip volunteers with basic skills to staff shelters and help with mass care tasks like food preparation and distribution. As volunteers become more involved with the Red Cross, there are opportunities to work in different areas and to take on increasing levels of responsibility. “We have opportunities for every age and ability,” Montgomery said. “We hope to build our capacity with local volunteers ready to respond if needed.”

The Red Cross Disaster Boot Camps will be held East Providence on October 29 and in South Kingstown on November 12. Registration is free of charge and online at http://bit.ly/RIRedCrossBootCamp. When registering, people will be able to select the location and time that is most convenient. Registrants will received a confirmation email with further details on the training and the training location.
