FLORENCE, S.C. May 14, 2014 – Sonoco of Hartsville has donated $20,000 to the Pee Dee Chapter of The American Red Cross for the ongoing relief efforts in the aftermath of the spring storms which struck April 25.
Since April 25, Red Cross workers have helped people affected by these spring storms in 14 states where more than 3,000 homes across 10 states have been destroyed or heavily damaged by tornadoes or floods. The Palmetto SC Region has deployed eight people to aid in the response efforts.
“Sonoco’s generous donation to The Red Cross will provide relief to those in the Midwest as well as the communities in the Pee Dee who suffer from devastating losses,” said Linda Boone-Smith, executive director of the Pee Dee Chapter of the American Red Cross. “It will make an impact to those still suffering from the storms and we are grateful to Sonoco for their donation.”
In response to this severe spring weather, nearly 1,900 trained Red Cross workers and 70 emergency vehicles have been mobilized to provide help in the hardest hit communities. Workers and volunteers have served 188,000 meals and snacks; provided 1,700 overnight stays in shelters; handed out more than 81,000 relief items; and provided 8,400 health and emotional support contacts.
“Our hearts go out to all the individuals and families that were affected by these severe storms. We have several operations in this part of the country and members of our Sonoco family were not immune to the impact. The Red Cross does great work every day and their workers and volunteers do especially exceptional work in the aftermath of events like these devastating storms, so we are happy to help in any way that we can,” said Jack Sanders, president and CEO of Sonoco.
Because of trained disaster volunteers and financial assistance from the community, Red Cross has been able to help more than 1,400 people affected by disasters in the Palmetto SC region since Jan. 1. On average, the American Red Cross, Palmetto SC Region responds to a disaster every 6.5 hours. The Palmetto SC Region is made up of seven Red Cross chapters spanning 35-counties of South Carolina.
