Supreme Court Hosts Red Cross Women Leaders
Wednesday, June 10, 2009 — The Tiffany Circle women and a few good men concluded the 2009 Tiffany Circle summit Tuesday evening at the U.S. Supreme Court.
Justice Anthony Kennedy welcomed the women to the historic building, and explained that the Supreme Court and the American Red Cross are synonymous in the sense that they bring freedom to the world and they have respect and dignity for each individual.
“We enhance our own freedom if we can give it to others,” said Justice Kennedy.
The women’s visit to the Supreme Court was particular meaningful due to the recent nomination of Sonia Sotomayor as the court's first Hispanic justice and its third female justice. Alice Puente from the Chisholm Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross (Fort Worth, Texas) explained why the evening was significant to her.
Melanie Sabelhaus, National Chair of the Tiffany Circle, and American Red Cross national board member, encouraged the women to accept General Russel L. Honoré’s earlier challenge to recruit their friends to join the Tiffany Circle.
Sabelhaus also introduced a new concept created by the Tiffany Circle National Council – the Bonnie McElveen-Hunter Tiffany Circle Lifetime Membership, a $100,000 commitment over ten years. Sabelhaus then asked the women to stand if they were willing to make this generous commitment. Throughout the room, women rose from their chairs and cheered.
