2008 Disaster Relief Program Annual Review Released
In 2008, our nation was struck by a number of disasters that seemed to follow one after another: a record-breaking tornado season, the Midwest’s worst flooding in 15 years, major wildfires and a hurricane season that had eight named storms hitting the U.S. coast. Because of you, the American Red Cross was there.
We have produced the report, We Were There Because of You: The 2008 Disaster Relief Program Annual Review and a few brief photo essays to show you how your generous contribution made a difference to those affected by disasters in 2008.
Many corporations, foundations and individuals made our immediate disaster relief response possible. Through your donations and through the strength of the Disaster Relief Fund, we were able to:
- open 1,400 shelters that provided more than 530,000 overnight stays.
- deploy disaster workers in emergency response vehicles who helped distribute more than 18.4 million meals and snacks and provide basic physical and emotional support.
- distribute more than 330,000 clean-up and comfort kits that provided the simple necessities that people need after a disaster.
People who turn to the Red Cross in their darkest hour count on us to help them. Fulfilling our humanitarian mission is only possible with your support. Thank you.
