M. Gnanamaa, a 43 year old mother from Sri Lanka, was living with her husband and three children when the tsunami hit, sweeping away her home and possessions. The tsunami destroyed her home, disabled her husband, and seemed to leave their future with little hope. However, with physical and emotional help from the American Red Cross, their situation has improved significantly four years later.
"At that time we just wanted to save our lives," M. Gnanamaa shares. "We didn't have any expectation that we can live any longer, because we lost everything. We were living in a house made out of clay and it was not very comfortable. Fortunately, we got this house and land."
M.Gnanamaa's children have since married, and she and her husband have moved into a new home, funded by the American Red Cross. Although happy with their new home in Batticaloa, they are still adjusting to their new community. Continued American Red Cross organized community activities are helping integrate the couple into their new community.
