Statement In Response to an Article Accusing The American Red Cross of Supporting Terrorism Through its Relationship with The Palestine Red Crescent

WASHINGTON, Monday, June 07, 2004 — Reports that the American Red Cross supports the activities of terrorists are disturbing and unfounded.

We’ve worked closely with the Palestine Red Crescent and other Red Cross and Red Crescent partners in addressing the abuse of Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems, a troubling issue which critically affects our ability to serve the beneficiaries who need us most.

This incident appears to be the work of individuals. We have no reason to believe that any of our Red Cross or Red Crescent partners sanctioned or supported this incident.

We actively work with more than 60 national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies on a variety of projects including emergency response, food programming, primary health care, and water and sanitation services. Critical steps to ensure the safety of personnel and resources are taken by all members of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, including the American Red Cross.
