WASHINGTON, Monday, September 27, 2004 — Langston University announced today its receipt of an award from the American Red Cross honoring Langston for its recent efforts to raise blood donations from its campus.

Langston was given the award at its eighth annual T. M. Crisp Classic football game at half time in Oklahoma City at Taft Stadium on Sat., Sept. 25. Langston raised 52 pints of blood.

“We are excited about this year’s honor from the American Red Cross. Langston will continue to be a leader in helping others in the community who need our help most,” said Dr. Ernest L. Holloway, president of Langston University.

Langston has participated in an annual blood drive and competition with Lincoln University of Jefferson City, Missouri since 2000. The purpose of the blood drive is to have the students and faculty of both institutions become more aware of the importance of blood donations and to encourage them to become regular blood donors.

“Our support of the American Red Cross could not come at a better time in light of the recent hurricanes and tragedies facing our families and friends in Florida and the southern United States,” said Leslie McClellon, blood donor coordinator at Langston.

Langston plans to expand its blood and a bone marrow recruitment drive to the Oklahoma City and Tulsa campuses next year.

Langston won the football game 40-20. Langston is 3-1.

Crisp retired from coaching in 1973 and was inducted into the Oklahoma High School Coaches Hall of Fame in the same year.

Langston University was founded in 1897 in Langston, Oklahoma.
