Back in December of 1995 I was 8 months pregnant with my now 17 year old daughter. It was the middle of the night when I heard someone pounding on the door. I answered the door only to find out that my house was on fire. I ran upstairs to grab my 2 1/2 yr old son and woke my husband and we rushed out of the house. It was a chimney fire, and by the time we were woken, the whole side of the house was ablaze. I watched from my neighbors house as my house burned, crying and very shaken. Finally the fire trucks came, but the damage was enormous. Not long after the fire trucks came, another vehicle pulled up, and I wasn't sure who they were. To my amazement it was the Red Cross. They offered us shelter, clothes, food, and asked what else we needed. It was incredible to me how fast they were there, and it was so touching during one the most horrific times in my life. I've never forgotten how wonderful they were that night. I will always have a warm spot in my heart for this wonderful organization.
