"The Notagains": A Disaster Preparedness and Response CD-ROM for Children

Grades 1-3
9-1-1 Calls

Objectives:

  • Each student will understand when and how to make a 911 call.
  • Each student will demonstrate how to make a 911 call.

Lesson Plan:
  1. Present the section on 911 calls to the entire class. Click on the reels and play each call.
  2. Discuss the importance of providing the emergency operator with the correct information and what the caller should do while they wait for help, in each case.
  3. List all of the information on a flip chart and post the information on the classroom wall so that everyone can see it.
  4. Break the class up into small groups of two and have each group send and receive emergency calls.
  5. Have each group present their calls to the whole group.
  6. Invite a representative from the Red Cross to your class either before or after this activity to provide the students with some tips about 911 calls and with fun stories about local emergency calls.

Emergency Plans for Pets

Objectives:

  • Each student will understand the importance of preparing for their pets should an emergency occur.
  • Each student will develop an emergency plan for their pet.

Lesson Plan:

  1. Present the section "Making Emergency Plans for Your Pet" to the class.
  2. Break the class into small groups according to the type of pets they own.
  3. Have each group develop an emergency plan for their particular pet. Remember to consider food needs, unique fears, type of disaster, etc.
