"The Notagains": A Disaster Preparedness and Response CD-ROM for Children

Teacher's Guide
The Red Cross Disaster Safety CD-ROM can be viewed alone, within small groups, or with a whole class. The games can be played individually or in small groups and provide a fun way to assess your students’ learning. Representatives from your local Red Cross or emergency management offices are ideal guests to bring into a classroom to supplement and localize this kind of learning experience. Follow-up activities, such as peer education projects and school-sponsored local disaster awareness events provide additional opportunities for students to use the information they are gaining in an empowering and proactive way.

The following Teacher’s Guide has been developed to aid in your classroom preparations.

Develop a Family Emergency Plan
A recommended individual activity that all primary school students can do after viewing this CD-ROM is to develop a family emergency plan.

  1. Have the students view the CD-ROM in small groups, paying special attention to the Notagains' emergency plans.
  2. Have each group write up the suggested procedures for each disaster and present them to the class.
  3. List the steps on a chalk board or newsprint pad and post this information on the wall.
  4. Have students work at home with their families on the development of emergency plans.
  5. In the class discussion about their family emergency plans, also include emergency procedures used at school--fire drill, flood procedures, etc.
