    Lifeguard Recruitment

Lifeguarding: A Job so Hot, It's Cool
American Red Cross Lifeguard Recruitment Campaign

Since 1914, the American Red Cross has proudly trained lifeguards to protect the nation's families at swimming pools, waterparks, recreation centers, camps and other aquatic facilities. Last year alone, approximately 200,000 lifeguards participated in Red Cross Lifeguard Training. Still, that is not enough as America has experienced a steadily increasing need for lifeguards, due in part to the growing number of aquatic facilities being built with multiple attractions, such as water slides and wave pools. Because of their size and sophistication, multi-attraction facilities require considerably more lifeguards. Further, more and more new waterparks, camps and residential pools (at apartment complexes and condominiums) are opening up to meet consumer demands and therefore are increasing the demand for lifeguards. Unfortunately, the supply of lifeguards has not kept pace with the demand.

The Red Cross is dedicated to keeping people and communities safe by helping them to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. As a major safety issue and a threat to popular recreation activities, addressing the lifeguard shortage and keeping people safe in and around the water are major priorities of the Red Cross.

The Red Cross has developed the framework of a lifeguard recruitment campaign that aquatic facilities across the nation can draw from to develop a campaign to meet their needs.

Consider teaming up with your local American Red Cross chapter and implementing the following suggestions as part of your lifeguard recruiting efforts. We encourage you to use the ideas and tools provided to develop your customized campaign. Click on each item for additional information on these recruitment ideas.
