African American HIV/AIDS Program
About Our Program
Fundamentals includes the most up-to-date information about
the impact of HIV and AIDS in African American communities. It provides
culturally specific activity options, and emphasizes encouraging HIV
prevention behavior. Red Cross trained instructors use interactive
activities to help make community sessions culturally relevant.
The American Red Cross African American HIV/AIDS Program was developed
under the leadership of African American paid and volunteer staff of the
Red Cross working in partnership with the National Urban League. The
revision of the program provides new educational strategies and guidance
for facilitating skill-building activities to encourage and support
prevention behaviors.
We train instructors
to conduct factually accurate, nonjudgmental, culturally appropriate
HIV/AIDS prevention sessions that promote self-protective behaviors. Red
Cross chapters collaborate with other organizations to deliver these
sessions in classrooms, places of worship, community centers, and wherever
young people gather.
