Basic HIV/AIDS Program

"Because I thought I had educated my children about sex, I relaxed with a sigh of relief and considered that difficult task to be over. I didn't keep myself or my children informed about sexually transmitted diseases..."

Fundamentals
Participants in these sessions--

  • Learn the facts about HIV and AIDS and discuss them.
  • May develop a personal "contract with myself" to choose specific ways they will apply the facts about HIV to their own behavior.
  • Explore in greater depth a topic of special interest to the group, such as women and HIV or parent-child communication.
  • Watch and discuss a video about people living with HIV or AIDS.

Sessions can be specially geared toward young people aged 13 and older. For example, heartfelt letters written by a young woman with HIV and her mother can be used to help participants personalize information about HIV transmission and prevention. Or, a guest speaker, such as a young person living with HIV or AIDS can speak with the group about their experiences and answer questions.
