Red Cross Instructor Saves Swimmer from Drowning
Cathy Andrew was entering the pool area at a condominium complex in Palm Springs, Calif. when she heard someone scream "Call 9-1-1!" She saw some commotion at the other end of the pool and ran over to see what the problem was. Carl Davis had become unconscious while swimming and sank to the bottom of the pool.
Ms. Andrew has been involved with the American Red Cross Orange County Chapter for several years as an instructor in CPR and Water Safety so she knew just what to do. She and another individual pulled Mr. Davis to the surface of the water and then onto the pool deck. Ms. Andrew immediately assessed the victim's situation and directed bystanders to call 9-1-1. Mr. Davis was not breathing, had no pulse, and his skin color was blue. Ms. Andrew began performing CPR and Mr. Davis' pulse and breathing soon returned.
When paramedics arrived, Ms. Andrew provided all the pertinent information about Mr. Davis' condition and the care that she had given. Mr. Davis was treated at the hospital, underwent a rehabilitation period, and was able to recover his strength and resume his normal activities. Peggy Davis, wife of the victim, offered this comment about Cathy Andrew's response: "The paramedics and the doctors at Desert Hospital agreed that if Cathy had not reacted quickly and efficiently my husband would not be alive…. I have never witnessed a more professional technique from anyone."
