Babysitter Gives Life-Saving Passover Gift

Aviva Landie of Denver was babysitting for 4-year-old Gabe Levin and feeding Gabe a Passover lunch of matzo crackers, jelly, and cheese. An experienced babysitter who was trained by the American Red Cross Mile High Chapter, Aviva told Gabe that he needed to take smaller bites so as not to choke on the cracker. Suddenly she saw Gabe begin to choke on a large bite of matzo. His face turned red and then blue. After confirming that Gabe was choking, Aviva acted immediately by administering abdominal thrusts. The cracker was dislodged after a few thrusts and Gabe was able to breathe again.

The skills that Aviva learned in the American Red Cross course helped to save Gabe Levin's life. Aviva was awarded the Red Cross Certificate of Merit, the highest award given by the American Red Cross to an individual or team of individuals who saves or sustains a life by using skills and knowledge learned in a Red Cross Health and Safety Services course.
