Unit I: HIV/AIDS Education Curriculum --
Ages 6-9

The following six sessions, each last approximately 1 hour:

  • Session I: Staying Healthy
  • Session II: Who Am I?
  • Session III: Feelings
  • Session IV: Learning About HIV and AIDS
  • Session V: How HIV Is Not Spread
  • Session VI: Sharing Feelings

Highlights of Unit I include:

  • The "How Many Ways Can You Stay Healthy?" poster, which introduces young children to the concepts of healthy self-care, and gets them thinking and talking about keeping their bodies healthy.
  • The "Camp Itsamongus" video or story, which addresses common fears and myths about HIV and AIDS.
  • Discussion topics designed to reduce fear about HIV/AIDS.

Hands-on art and play activities reinforce the material, including:

  • Making a "Staying Healthy" scrapbook
  • Making a "How to Treat Others" mobile
  • Playing the "Musical Chairs How HIV/AIDS Is Not Spread" game
  • Presenting a puppet show about sharing feelings
