Unit II: HIV/AIDS Education Curriculum -- Ages 10-13
The following six sessions, each last approximately 1 hour:
- Session I: Building a Foundation For Learning About HIV and AIDS
- Session II: More Information about HIV and AIDS
- Session III: Risk-Taking Behavior
- Session IV: Skills to Resist Pressure
- Session V: Decision Making
- Session VI: Communicating What We Have Learned - A Group Project
Highlights of Unit II include:
- Learning about the ways a person can become infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
- Learning how to avoid becoming infected with HIV.
- Developing ways to respond without fear to people who have HIV or AIDS.
- "Taking a chance!" Assessing the difference between a healthy risk and an unhealthy risk.
- Practicing nine ways to resist peer pressure to have sex, use drugs, or drink alcohol.
- Competing in games such as the "Relay Race" and "Team Hunt for Decisions," that test knowledge about HIV and AIDS.
- Acting in skits to practice decision-making skills, performing a "Just Say No" rap song, and participating in other creative projects that inform how to prevent HIV.
