Are you 15 or older and looking for a great summer job or a challenging career? American Red Cross Lifeguarding is the best place to start! Lifeguarding puts you in an exciting position, working as part of a team to help people safely enjoy the water. Read about Red Cross-trained lifeguards who have saved the lives of others. You could save a life too!

Lifeguarding will help you develop skills and experience that will be valued by colleges and future employers. It's a great way to demonstrate what you can offer. Colleges and employers look for applicants who can deal effectively with people, who have a take charge attitude and who are willing to work to develop new skills. What You Will Learn
American Red Cross training makes learning fun and easy. Through classroom learning and hands-on practice, you'll learn:

  • Surveillance skills to help you recognize and prevent injuries
  • Rescue skills - in the water and on land
  • First aid training and professional rescuer CPR - to help you prepare for any emergency
  • Professional lifeguard responsibilities like interacting with the public and addressing uncooperative patrons

Enroll today for American Red Cross Lifeguarding at an aquatics facility near you. Course lengths vary from 30 to 37 hours and options include:

  • Lifeguarding - for lifeguards working at traditional pools
  • Waterfront Lifeguarding - for lifeguards at non-surf, open-water environments such as lakes and rivers, as well as traditional pools
  • Waterpark Lifeguarding - for lifeguards at waterparks, multi-attraction facilities and traditional pools
  • Shallow Water Attendant - for lifeguards that will work only in areas with waster attractions up to four feet deep

Red Cross Instructor Saves Swimmer From Drowning
Cathy Andrew was entering the pool area at a condominium complex in Palm Springs, Calif. when she heard someone scream "Call 9-1-1!" She saw some commotion at the other end of the pool and ran over to see what the problem was. Carl Davis had become unconscious while swimming and sank to the bottom of the pool.
