American Red Cross Board of Governors Resolution on the Magen David Adom--October 1989
On October 20, 1989, the Board of Governors unanimously approved a resolution that forms the backbone of American Red Cross policy toward the Magen David Adom:
"The American Red Cross reaffirms its recognition of the Magen David Adom (MDA) as a national society that forms a part of the International Red Cross Movement and that adheres to and serves to further the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, and of the MDA's emblem, the red shield of David. The American Red Cross fully supports the MDA in its desire to be recognized by the International Committee of the Red Cross and admitted to the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.* The American Red Cross believes that League admission of the MDA is right and just and in furtherance of the fundamental principle of universality.** The American Red Cross will take action that is supported by the MDA and the U.S. Department of State to assist in the recognition and admission of the MDA as a member in good standing of the International Red Cross Movement. The American Red Cross encourages the recognition by other national societies of the MDA's emblem, the red shield of David, in the provision of humanitarian services."
* In 1991, the official name of the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies was changed to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
** The fundamental principle of universality states: "The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, in which all societies have equal status and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide."
