Recognition of the Magen David Adom and its Emblem
WHEREAS, the Magen David Adom is the humanitarian aid society in Israel which carries on the work begun by J. Henry Dunant on the battlefield of Solferino; and
WHEREAS, the Magen David Adom of Israel adheres to and implements the humanitarian principles of the Red Cross; and
WHEREAS, the Magen David Adom of Israel is qualified under the Statutes of the International Red Cross for recognition as a national society in all but one area, that of the protective symbol it employs, the red shield of David; and
WHEREAS, the American Red Cross has expressed its support for the recognition of the Magen David Adom, has urged other national societies to work cooperatively with the Magen David Adom as the de facto national society of Israel, and has encouraged and promoted the said recognition at International Red Cross conferences over the years;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the American Red Cross continue its efforts for recognition of the Magen David Adom of Israel as a member of the worldwide family of national Red Cross societies; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the American Red Cross promote the re-establishment of the International Red Cross Working Group on Protective Emblems and urge that group to consider the possibilities of de facto recognition of protective emblems under the Geneva Conventions; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the American Red Cross work with the U.S. Jewish community to develop understanding of the Red Cross movement issues involved in the question of recognition of the Magen David Adom and to take cooperative action to resolve those issues.
