American Red Cross Helps Earthquake Survivors in Pakistan Prepare for Winter
It is February 2007 and Northern Pakistan is in the midst of its second harsh winter since an earthquake devastated the region in October 2005, killing more than 73,000 people and leaving more than 3.5 million people homeless.
Survivors suffered another setback in June and July 2006 when monsoonal rains caused severe flooding and mudslides. The American Red Cross recently provided $1.5 million for winter preparedness, including household repair kits and roofing materials, to help survivors through the brutal winter months, and it deployed two international response delegates to support the relief efforts of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
