National Readiness and Response Corps
The National Readiness and Response Corps (NRRC), sponsored by the American Red Cross and funded by an AmeriCorps grant from the Corporation for National Service, is the foremost young adult disaster service corps in the nation. The mission of NRRC is to provide vital emergency assistance to victims and communities affected by disaster and increase preparedness in the areas of greatest need before disasters strike by recruiting, training and supporting young adults in Red Cross direct service activities. We have programs for full-time volunteers at Red Cross chapters in the following locations: Baltimore, Chicago, Greenwich, Connecticut, Los Angeles County, Fort Myers, New Orleans, Oregon, Philadelphia, Puerto Rico, Cedar Rapids, IA, Baton Rouge, Santa Barbara, Tampa, Springfield, IL, Richmond, Seattle, Anchorage, AK (South Central Alaska Chapter), Peoria, IL (Central Illinois Chapter), New York, NY (American Red Cross of Greater New York chapter), and Ward Hill, MA (Merrimack Valley Chapter). Members help communities to prepare for disasters by providing community disaster education as well as provide emergency assistance to victims of local disasters and those that occur within the borders of the United States of America and its territories.
To be considered as an applicant, you must be able to meet the following criteria--
- Be available full-time. Weekend/evening hours are required for 6 or 10 months.
- Be able to mobilize on disaster assignments for 21 days at a time with little advance notice.
- Be interested in teaching/training.
- Have at least one year of prior national or community volunteer experience.
- Have a current and valid driver's license or will receive one by August 5, 2002.
- Demonstrate professionalism, flexibility, and initiative.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.
- Be team oriented.
- Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

While serving with the program, members receive a weekly living allowance, extensive Red Cross training, health care coverage, and an educational award upon successful completion of the program.
