For more than a decade, FedEx Corporation, the worldwide express shipping company, has donated free shipping and logistical support to help the American Red Cross get needed emergency supplies to areas affected by disaster. The company’s expertise in moving large numbers of packages in extremely short time frames is a valuable resource for Red Cross workers when equipment needs to be moved from here to there, in a matter of hours rather than days.
As a member of the Annual Disaster Giving Program, FedEx Corporation has pledged $1.75 million over a five-year period to help provide a stable base of funding for response to thousands of disasters nationwide each year. Part of this gift goes to support the Mid-South Chapter of the Red Cross, serving FedEx corporate headquarters. In 2005, FedEx made an additional contribution of $500,000 to help replenish the Disaster Relief Fund following Hurricane Katrina.
FedEx also contributes generous in-kind shipping support of nearly $1 million each year. In 2005, FedEx contributed an extra $500,000 in-kind shipping to help The Red Cross move needed supplies in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
On a local level, FedEx employees have also been involved in Red Cross operations, from serving as trained volunteers and instructors in their communities, to holding leadership positions on chapter and national boards.
Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, FedEx supplied two trucks for a "rolling warehouse" to provide storage and efficient distribution of donated clothing for firefighters and rescue workers. FedEx also transported donated items from area schools for use at the Pennsylvania crash site. In addition, employees in High Point, North Carolina, held a fundraiser to collect money from members of the community, to be added to the Liberty Fund.
