I've been working in humanitarian development and relief efforts for most of my life, joining the Northeastern New York Red Cross Emergency Services Department is a natural fit.

ALBANY, NY (October 24, 2012) – The American Red Cross Northeastern New York Region (ARCNENY) recently announced the appointment of Michael Raphael as an Emergency Services Department Response Manager responsible for covering Fulton, Hamilton, Montgomery and Schoharie Counties.

In this role, Raphael will sustain and support the Red Cross Disaster Action Teams to increase their capacity, span of control and response time. He will also act as government liaison and primary point of contact for Red Cross partner agencies in the four counties.

In addition, Raphael will become the lead for health services and mental health services throughout all 17 counties in the Northeastern New York Region.

"Michael brings a fresh perspective and valuable knowledge from his experiences in the health services community and his collaborative work with humanitarian organizations from local to multinational levels," said Tim Bachman, ARCNENY Director of Emergency Services.

Prior to joining the Red Cross, Raphael managed a disaster mental health program called Project Hope, which was funded by FEMA following Hurricane Irene (2011) in Ulster, NY. He's also been an active Red Cross volunteer for the past two years. His career includes consultant work specializing in community outreach, project management and conflict resolution with governmental and non-governmental agencies in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East.

"My goal is to be as efficient and responsive as I possibly can, to meet the needs of the community during times of disasters."

Raphael resides in Woodstock, NY with his wife and two daughters.
