American Red Cross Fundraising Event Touts Disaster Preparedness and Surviving in Style

Expect the unexpected at this new fundraiser for the Oregon Red Cross, which includes champagne tastings, live music, an auction of celebrity-inspired preparedness kits and more.

Flashlights, water and a blanket are items critical to surviving a disaster, but what items would you include in your preparedness kit to survive in style? Oregon Red Cross volunteers and staff members posed the question to local celebrities and created ten robust auction packages, which are the focal point of “Surviving in Style,” a new fundraising event for the Oregon Red Cross. The April 18 event at Pure Space in Portland’s Pearl District, from 6 to 9 p.m., brings together top business executives and community leaders for an evening of food and frivolity, live music and a chance to bid on the celebrity-inspired survival kits.

Olympic fencer Cody Mattern; authors Katherine Dunn and Phillip Margolin; outdoor enthusiast Bill Sullivan; Elk Cove vintners Pat and Joe Campbell; and Portland’s own Packy the elephant have lent their name to the event – as well as some personal items – for the auction packages.

The event kicks off with a reception during which patrons have an opportunity to dine, drink, have their photo taken in a rescue pod, and review a display of auction packages. Each package, themed with disaster preparedness in mind, offers an interactive experience such as a guided fishing trip on the Deschutes River, a South African safari, a tour of National American Red Cross headquarters in Washington, D.C., or a private fencing class. In addition, auction packages contain useful items to have on hand in the event of a disaster.

For those who cannot attend Surviving in Style, organizers are offering the chance to win one of the auction packages through a “golden ticket” raffle at and in advance of the event. The winning ticket holder gets to choose from any of the auction items, prior to the live event. Only 75 tickets will be sold at $100 each.
