American Red Cross Gives $1.5 Million to Bastrop Recovery Effort
“For the people of Bastrop County, the disaster didn’t end when the fires were put out,” said Marty McKellips, Regional Chief Executive Officer, American Red Cross of Central Texas.

Austin, Texas, September 3, 2013 — The American Red Cross of Central Texas today awarded a Community Grant of $1.5 million to the Bastrop County Long Term Recovery Team (BCLTRT). The additional funding will be used to complete construction of 30 new homes for families that were displaced by the 2011 wildfires, which destroyed nearly 1,700 homes and more than 34,000 acres of land.

“For the people of Bastrop County, the disaster didn’t end when the fires were put out,” said Marty McKellips, Regional Chief Executive Officer, American Red Cross of Central Texas. “Community members, volunteers and donors have worked tirelessly to restore and rebuild this community, and it is the Red Cross of Central Texas’ honor to further that mission. We are committed to empowering the community throughout its long term recovery process and preparing the area for any future disasters.”

The BCLTRT has set a goal to raise an additional $100,000 through community fundraisers and private donations to provide the funds necessary to implement this grant and complete the construction of 30 more homes.

“Thirty families who remained on our waiting list for assistance will now be able to rebuild their lives because of this grant,” said Christine Files, President of the Board, Bastrop County Long Term Recovery Team. “We are so thrilled, and we hope this serves as an incentive for the Central Texas community to help us finish the recovery efforts that have been started.”

The BCLTRT has completed the rebuilding of 79 homes in Bastrop County with funds raised in the two years since the wildfires occurred, yet the need for financial assistance in the area is still great.
