On September 28, members of the Santa Cruz philanthropic community and Red Cross supports will gather at the Cocoanut Grove Ballroom at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk for the second annual “Celebrate the Red 2012.” This headlining, volunteer-led fundraising event will raise awareness of the vital roles the Red Cross plays within the local and global communities and will feature a champagne reception, buffet dinner, music and a silent auction.

During the night, Jack O’ Neill of O’Neill Wetsuits will be presented with the American Red Cross Santa Cruz County Chapter Humanitarian of the Year award. O’Neill’s continued commitment to the community and his encouragement of others made him stand out as this year’s recipient.

Celebrate the Red 2012is the American Red Cross Santa Cruz County Chapter’s annual fundraising event that benefits local disaster relief and readiness for Santa Cruz County’s residents and businesses. Thanks to the support of Santa Cruz County volunteers, board members and donors the Chapter were able to execute the following last year:

  • Respond to 61 local disasters, mostly home fires
  • Assist over 113 families with food, clothing, shelter and emotional support
  • Deploy 200+ volunteers to local and national disasters
  • Teach 8,407 people skills necessary to prepare their families, neighborhoods and businesses for future disasters
  • Train 4,337 local residents in the live saving skills of CPR, first aid, water safety and babysitting skills
  • Initiate over 61 emergency messages between local military members and their families
  • Hold 87 Red Cross Blood Drives which provided 3,950 units which is equivalent to 493 gallons of life-saving blood.
