Central Texans Save 58,000 Lives in One Special Evening

Save 58,000 Lives in One Special Evening
We've proven that the Central Texas community can make a global impact.

The American Red Cross of Central Texas not only met but exceeded its goal of raising $50,000 in one special evening through its first ever “Night of 50,000 Lives” dinner at Sway on Thursday, February 13, 2014. Through generous donations made online, ticket sales, sponsorship and a fund-a-cause auction, the local Red Cross chapter saved more than 58,000 lives through the Measles & Rubella Initiative.

The Measles & Rubella Initiative is a global health partnership co-founded by the American Red Cross. Measles is one of the most contagious diseases ever known, and it kills hundreds of thousands of children each year. Yet, a single vaccine costs only $1. One dollar can save the life of a child.

The Measles & Rubella Initiative has drastically reduced measles deaths worldwide by 78% between 2000 and 2012, from an estimated 562,000 to 122,000—and the goal is to continue this trend and eradicate measles by 2020.

Made possible by a grant from the Alice Kleberg Reynolds Foundation, the “Night of 50,000 Lives” was a special five-course dinner presented by Executive Chef Alexis Chong. The evening was topped off by guest speaker David Meltzer, General Counsel and Chief International Officer for the American Red Cross, who traveled to Austin from Washington, D.C. to share his experiences leading Red Cross international humanitarian relief efforts, and specifically his experience with the Measles & Rubella Initiative.

Through the generosity of donors—both those who attended the fundraiser at Sway and those who donated online through our Night of 50,000 Lives Crowdrise page—we have come together as a community to save the lives of more than 58,000 children.
