Community Coffee Company shares more than a cup with Red Cross

The comfort of giving someone a cup of coffee when they’re in need means everything, Matt Saurage, president and CEO of Community Coffee

What's in your coffee cup? During disaster, when the American Red Cross shares that cup, it's comfort.

And now, Community Coffee Company is making that happen for many more people in South Louisiana when disaster strikes.

The United States largest family-owned and operated retail coffee brand has donated coffee and tea machines capable of serving more than a hundred cups with one brew to the Louisiana Capital Area Chapter.

“We always want to help the Red Cross,” said Matt Saurage, chairman of Community Coffee Company, noting how nice it was to be at the Red Cross when it was quiet. “Giving back is an important part of what we do.”

During a disaster response, hundreds of volunteers operate out of the chapter’s emergency operations center and distribution facility, including those taking food and hydration to residents affected by disaster.

“Now we will be able to efficiently provide coffee and tea to hundreds of people,” said Charles McCowan, the volunteer who leads feeding operations for the Louisiana Capital Area Red Cross. “We were filling six cups at a time.”

Community Coffee Company’s relationship with the Red Cross goes way back. Even after Hurricane Katrina, which damaged some coffeehouses and displaced employees, the company was supporting relief efforts alongside Red Cross volunteers.

“The comfort of giving someone a cup of coffee when they’re in need means everything,” Saurage said.
