Corpus Christi Students Give Service Through Penny Drive

CORPUS CRISTI, TEXAS OCTOBER 26, 2011 — Students across Corpus Christi are pitching in to help their community one cent at a time. Students have given their pennies through most of month from October 3-21 to support their local American Red Cross. The Penny Power Challenge presents a teachable moment for students to help them think about the importance of giving back.

“We are extremely grateful for the support of these students. This simple act of donating pennies has had a big impact on us. We have not been surprised by the success of the penny drive. We have some amazing kids and future Red Cross volunteers here in our area,” said Debra Murphy-Luera, Executive Director, Coastal Bend Chapter of the American Red Cross.

About the American Red Cross:

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation's blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization — not a government agency — and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
