Whether it be blood drives or finding temporary shelter for a family forced to live elsewhere due to a fire, the Red Cross is always there for us.

The American Red Cross of Northeastern New York (ARCNENY) is pleased to announce that former College of Saint Rose President, Dr. R. Mark Sullivan, as Honorary Chair for its 15th Annual Fire + Ice Gala. ARCNENY’s 15th Annual Fire + Ice Gala will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the Hilton Garden Inn & Rensselaer Banquet and Conference Facility in Troy, NY.

Sullivan, a much honored educator, is vastly respected for his leadership in higher education and for his distinguished service as a civic leader.

"I am honored to support the Red Cross in any way possible. We all think of the invaluable service rendered by the Red Cross in times of natural disasters and terrible weather related events; yet it is the work of this phenomenal organization day in and day out that binds our community and helps those most in need,” said Sullivan. “Whether it be blood drives or finding temporary shelter for a family forced to live elsewhere due to a fire, the Red Cross is always there for us.”

During Sullivan’s highly regarded tenure at Saint Rose, from 1996 to 2012, enrollment increased to more than 5,000 students in 134 undergraduate and graduate programs. The College was recently ranked among the top 40 master’s level colleges and universities in the Northeast-Middle Atlantic region, raising its standing by more than 30 spots in three years on U.S. News and World Report’s coveted list. Under Sullivan’s leadership, the College also tripled applications, and doubled first-year enrollment. Saint Rose received $42 million dollars in capital gifts, and the endowment increased seven-fold.

A strong advocate of community service, Sullivan serves on the Board for the Capitalize Albany Corporation, the KeyBank District Advisory Board and the Board of Directors of Saint Catherine’s Center for Children. His previous service includes the boards of the Albany Public Library’s Citizen Library Advisory Committee and the Albany Police Foundation.

Among Sullivan’s many distinguished awards are: the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Angel Award; the Citizen Laureate Award from the University at Albany; the Community Partner Award from the Black & Latino Achiever Program, Capital District YMCA; the Executive of the Year Award from the Business Review; the Community Builder Award from Jewish Family Services; the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Autism Society of the Greater Capital Region; and the Champions for Children of the Capital Region Award from the Northeast Parent and Child Society.

Sullivan is now Director of the R. Mark Sullivan Institute for Higher Education Leadership at The College of Saint Rose, and Professor of Education in the Thelma P. Lally School of Education.

The Fire + Ice theme represents the typical types of disasters that the Red Cross frequently responds to in our region. The gala will feature gourmet cuisine, live music, dancing, open bar and both live and silent auctions. Guests will be entertained by the New York Players, a favorite local band and for the second year, WNYT NewsChannel 13 Anchor Benita Zahn will emcee.
