Red Cross has three volunteers on the ground in Galena supporting kitchen and shelter staff who are caring for Galena residents who are unable to return to their homes.

Over the next week, the volunteers will continue to hand out the 295 personal hygiene comfort kits and the 200 cleanup kits that were assembled in Anchorage, Mat-Su and Fairbanks. Comfort kits contain basic hygiene necessities such as soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, wash clothes and the likes. Cleanup kits consist of buckets, mops, brooms, gloves and other heavy duty supplies that will aid in mucking out residents’ homes.

On Wednesday, June 12, volunteers will begin conducting individual assistance casework. Caseworkers will assess individual households’ needs for anyone affected by Yukon Koyukuk and Tok Rivers floods, aiding in replacing immediately needed items such as food, clothing and cleanup supplies.
